Within driving distance of Lake Bonnet Village are 13 golf courses - ranging from executive to championship quality. Pros are available to assist and most offer Clubhouse facilities. All courses are open to residents and visitors alike. Each course complements the surrounding environment and therefore, offers you a wide variety of golfing experiences. Courses are staffed with golf professionals, offer well-maintained carts, clubhouse facilities and other essential equipment. The courses also have available well-stocked Pro-Shops to provide visiting golfers with rental clubs and other necessary equipment. Reserved tee times are recommended at most courses however, it is unusual to not find a playing time that suits your needs any time of the year. Lake Bonnet provides an excellent opportunity for fishing enthusiasts to enjoy this past-time. There is a board ramp and docks available at the Park. Please visit the office or contact us at (863) 385-7010 for details concerning use of Park facilities and storage of trailers and boats.
Nearby Lake Istokpoga is a popular Florida destination for Big Bass fishing. The lake is host to several tournaments and there are numerous fishing guides available. A good place to put in would be Neibert's Fish Camp on Arbuckle Creek, just north of where the creek feeds in to Lake Istokpoga. Lake Glenada on the east side of Highway 27 across from the Avon Park Armory also attracts a lot of fishermen. Lake Letta off SR17 in Avon Park, Lake Childs near the town of Lake Placid and Lake Sebring in Sebring are very good. Fishing licenses are required. Boats with trailers can put-in at your choice of locations within the County.
Malls, department stores, boutiques and national chains such as Wal-Mart and Home Depot offer everything residents and visitors may want or need. The Lakeshore Mall (south) and Eagle Ridge Mall (north) are close by on Highway 27. There are two central shopping districts and numerous retail centers, as well as the "Mile Long Mall" antique district. Depending on the season, high quality citrus products are readily available and a good selection of fruit, juice and other products are reasonably priced. Also available are many excellent restaurants for the discerning diner. The friendly atmosphere and excellent service provide you with a satisfying shopping or dining experience.
Nature lovers will enjoy the Highland Hammock State Park where there are trails and boardwalks as well as a guided tram tour through native wilderness. Other trails are available at Water Management District, the Archbold Biological Station near Lake Placid or the Avon Park Air Force Range. Bicycling has become very popular here in recent years. Any skill level can find a perfect route through the surrounding countryside. In Sebring, the bike club, The Highland Peddlers, serves residents and visitors. In the Avon Park area there are more than 30 service and civic organizations, which welcome new members and participants. A list of these organizations is available from the Avon Park Chamber of Commerce office at 28 E. Main Street. The Greater Sebring Chamber of Commerce maintains a list of over 200 local clubs and organizations. Many cultural amenities accentuate the quality of life in Florida’s heartland. Numerous museums, art exhibits, art shows, craft fairs and performing arts presentations complement and enhance life in Highlands County. The Highlands Art League offers classes in painting, sculpture and crafts work and sponsors several exhibits each year. The annual Arts Festival, held each November in downtown Sebring, draws large attendance. Located near the center of downtown is the Allen Altvater Cultural Center. The performing arts and live theater is represented by Highlands Little Theater, who presents the highest quality in musical, variety and dramatic theater in a dinner theater setting on a year-round schedule. South Florida Community College offers events from Broadway plays to concerts and ballet. The Highlands County Concert Band delights audiences of all ages during the winter season and is complemented by performances of the Highlands Community Orchestra, the Highlandaires Big Band, the Celebration Brass, the Delta Chorale and the Sweet Adelines. The Children's Museum is a safe venue for children to learn and explore. The museum is located at 219 North Ridgewood Drive in downtown Sebring and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00am to 5:00pm. A small admission fee is charged. This game occupies a position of great prestige and is more comprehensively organized than any other card game. As well as the organized Bridge games in the Park, bridge is played weekly at the restaurant at Golf Hammock Country Club in Sebring. The Lakeshore Cinema is located in the Lakeshore Mall on US27. There are 8 screens and the box office is located inside the mall. Fairmont Cinema is located in the Fairmont Plaza in Sebring on US27. There are 6 screens and they offer a different variety of movies. The box office opens to the outside of the theater, under a canopy. Movies are shown 4 times daily and refreshments are available at concession stands. Regardless of the weather - sunny or wet - the local bowling establishment is just great for recreational or league bowling. Kegel Bowling Center on US27 has 16 lanes with snack bar, lounge and full-service pro-shop.
